Baltic Wharf, Bristol Docks 13-10-08

Baltic Wharf is at the Avon Gorge end of the Bristol Docks.
The water is between 9 and 18 feet deep.
There can (in the summer) be a lot of boats moving up and down.
As can be seen by the photo below it is a pavers / concrete bank.
This veiw is looking towards Bristol City Centre and the S.S. Great Britain.
This veiw is looking towards the Cumberland Basin
and the Locks to the river Avon and Bristol Channel.

Fish that can be caught here are Mullet (below)
Flounder, Trout, Roach, Skimmer Bream, Carp, Perch and Dace.
Some nice Roach can be seen in the photo above plus a Skimmer

and a Roach.

Fishing bristol docks is allways fun just for the fact that are is always an abundance of a variety of fish. Natural baits work well, bread sweetcorn maggotts, you can happilly target species, bream roach dace rudd, with bread sweetcorn, maggotts and live baits for perch. I have seen large carp and am targeting them so i have been finding myself a quite spot away from the drunks and chat all night types and then baiting up whilst fishing for 2 or 3 nights on the trott, had good catches of bream up to 7 pound but no carp as yet. I'm using carp end tackle, shock leaders size 8 hooks 15mm boilies popup sweetcorn and this all works well too eliminate smaller fish and give me a chance if i hook into a big'un! The fish are there you just need to catch them! My advice, go find a quite spot you like the look of and go fishing! The one thing i will say to bear in mind is this, your end tackle determines what you catch, bigger hooks bigger baits means not so many fish but the bigger end off the scale. So thats my two pence worth, i'll see you down there.

hi i was just wondering if u can spin down there for the bigger perch also ive heard there are pike in there aswell would it be worth me while going down for the day to preditor hunt?

Pat said...

I am not sure if it is any good spinning for Perch etc. Never tried it and not seen that style being used.
It is very deep and water vis can be low.
Also there are loads of people walking by, kids every where and boats of all sizes use that area.
Phone up the harbour master ( his phone number is on their web site) and ask.

this is a nice page, but i know very little so have a few q.s if you don't mind

can you tell me, though, whether you need a license to fish here? also- i presume that you can eat the fish, even though it's a city harbour, otherwise you'd not have a bag of them, yes?

cheers.

Yes you do need a licence to fish the docks and all British rivers, lakes and canals.
No you cannot eat the fish caught, they must be returned at the end of the fishing session.
The fish in my keep net were returned as soon as I had photographed and weighted them.
To fish with out a rod licence and the taking of fish are punishable by very expensive fines.

Sorry to bring up an old page, has anyone fished here recently, If so can you tell me a little more on the method that caught and what baits please? And I presume its still free fishing here apart from the rod licence of course?

Brook.

Its a bit rough fishing down there at the moment. This wind is a real problem and makes it bad for poles.
Last year the fish did not show until late summer, but the Bream did not show in any numbers.
You can fish from the first set of steps on the right around the corner to the left until the pub. I believe there is a sign there.
Pole is the main style down there because of the depth. 1 1/2 to 3grm pole floats are the usual, fishing 5 to 10 mtrs out.
Maggot, casters, worm and bread are used over hemp and ground bait.
I usually start fishing from the end of this month onwards. However it is hard work and you need to go down regularly to build up the swim.
Watch out for the boat especially the water taxis and the kids in the sailing boats.
You can fish for Carp which do show up, especially after dark, Flounder and Mullet can also be caught.
It is also free fishing but check with the habour master or Bristol City Council web site for other areas to fish.

My friends spun for perch there last year and caught a few perch, one was a reasonable size, i guess any coarse fishing techniques would have some success, my mission is to catch a carp this year, the best places are where people feed the ducks and swans so i guess near the pub with some pub food on the hook....

Okay lads thankyou very much! Going to go down with the float rod tomorrow morning, raspberry corn on the end fed over 6mm pellets, bread as an emergency backup. I'd be lost without my flake lol! Going to take my spinning rod also and look to get a curly -tailed grub on the move for a Perch or two, if the float doesn't slide under. I'll be back with my update tomorrow!

Does anyone know if it's subject to the closed season in three harbour?

Pat said...

Bristol Docks including Baltic Wharf do not have a closed season. Same as Canals and most lakes. However some lake owners do close for some if not all of the closed season. Check the lake rules before you go.
The closed season is only on rivers.

Hi guys.
Is it free fishing, day ticket or membership? Also what is the carp stock roughly? Cheers

Pat said...

Last I herd it was still free fishing. However the council are changing the rules so I suggest you check out www.bristol.gov.uk for the very latest rules.
As for stocks, I believe there is a healthy stock down there. I suggest a quick call to Bristol Angling Centre 01179508723 for info.
Good luck.
