Beaten by my son. Ladye Bay ledges.11-06-16

Headed down to the ledges for a few hours with Jason.
Tide was at 12.15 and 11.2m.
I started at 08.45 with Squid and frozen crab.

Well it was very slow until
about an hour before high water.
When Jason had a classic Thorny bite
on Macheral bait.
This beautifully marked Thornback Ray
of around 5ld
was Jay's first ever Thorny
and he was well stoked.
He hasn't stopped smiling and talking about it
all day.
My turn a short while later
with the rain coming down,
was this 15 inch Codling on
a cocktail of Lug, Rag and fresh peeler crab.
Jay's turn again after the rain
was this Cat Shark "AKA Dogfish"
For the last hour of fishing after
high water,
I had two Strap Conger
in quick succession.
It was a warm muggy day
with drizzle at times.
Tea shirt fishing
is so good.
Now time to service my
reels
and remake some rigs.
Another nice fishing trip.

Ladye Bay 31-05-16

A chance to get out came up
so I legged it down to Clevedon
for 05.00.
I chose the ledges for the low tide
session, with the low at 09.18.
I used Lug and Squid for bait,
with this small Conger being the
action, taking a whole Squid on a
Pennell Pulley rig.
The wind was quite brisk from the
north /  north east.
It was also a beautiful sunny morning
and surprisingly I was on my own.
Which means that the Channel is fishing
poorly.
After the first Conger I had a
Codling just short of keeper size,
taking Lug worm on a wishbone rig.
This was followed by a slightly
larger Conger on the wishbone rig
just before low water.
 At low water another Codling
took the wishbone rig as well.
With turn of the tide so the weed
started showing its self.
All during the tide the line
had the sticky mud causing
bunching on the line
which blocked the shock leader
from passing through the
top eye.
On winding in the last
cast I found these two tiddlers,
a Whiting and a Pouting.
Well I guess its still baby time out there,
and with some bait left over I
have another chance to fish
on Thursday.
Fingers crossed the larger fish are
out to play.

First warm fishing session 04-05-16

High water was at
18.16
and 12.6mtrs
Rag, Squid and Peelers
was the bait.
 Flat calm with light southerly
breeze,
made for a very enjoyable evenings fishing.
Rigs of the day were
Wishbone rig and Pennell Pullies.

 A small 4 inch Codling
fancied the Rag on the Wishbone
first cast.
Then it went quiet till
a series of rattles and pull downs
on the rod tip, a drop back
made me think it could be a
Thornback Ray.
However
this lump of weed
plus 5 leads
wound in.
 A further 8 inch Codling
decided some Rag worm
was needed for diner
that was it for any rod tip action.
I fished from 16.00 till 19.15.
Nice sunset on my fishing trip.

The I.C.I. Pipes area. 10-06-16

Well after some further medical drama
for She who must be obeyed,
I managed to be dragged out the house by
my son Jason
With Black Lug, Squid and Peeler Crab
and a 14.2 mtr tide
we trundled down to the Severn Beach.
Some diversion was needed due to road work
on the A403.
We started fishing around 08.15
and fished till 11.00,
high water was at 10.10.
 From the off, grass type
weed was a big problem along with
not managing to hold the bottom
with 190 and 210 grm leads.
Bites were few and difficult to see.
I managed 5 small Codling, (all returned)
while Jason had one a bit bigger than
mine
Well as can be seen the weather grand,
the only down side was an easterly wind.
Thanks Jason for dragging me out,
it was a great trip.

Out at last. 16-03-16

As she who must be obeyed has had her operation
and all seems to be getting better,
I decided to hit the Bristol Channel
at Ladye Bay.
So getting down there at 06.35
with Lug, Rag and Peeler Crab.
The usual pulley rigs with 4/0 hooks.
The weather was cloudy and chilly with a
north east gusty breeze.
From the off  my rigs were being
pulled out after some rattles.
So I had to reel in more often
then usual.
Low water was at 06.30ish
with high water around 12.20
and only 10.5mtrs.
Well I soon had the first Codling on the rocks,
a tiny 4 inch fish.
Slowly the bigger fish were banked,
the next around 6 inches then 8 inches.
by 11.15 this near 4lb Codling was banked.
Well by 12.30 the bait had run out
without any more fish.
Yet again a very enjoyable trip.

So what been happening?

Well I've been busy doing the caring thing
for She Who Must be Obeyed.
As the weather has been a bit on the
grotty side. I took an hour off
and popped down the Frome.
The River was up and running as expected.
Charging through and just in its bank,
a bit coffe coloured as well.
At least the foot path didn't fell left out.
Looking at the Environment Agencies web site
https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/river-and-sea-levels
it was showing that the Frome was running 2 mtrs,
at 13.00.
The Frome's  normal height is between 0.24 and 1.39mtrs
the highest recorded was 3 mtrs.
Nice standing wave at the bottom of the shoot.

As for the future, well I will be
sorting it out, fishing wise as soon as life settles down.

First trip of the 2016. 06-01-16

A very unexpected chance to get out fishing
found me up at Lacock at 07.00.
I was fishing by 07.20
and I was using pellets and Boillies.
I found the river was fining down
and about 1 1/2 ft water clarity.
There were signs that the river had
been close to or over the top of the bank
in places.
Well I fished four swims and found plenty of
old leaves and other plant rubbish
catching the hook in all of them.
I had a number of knocks and rattles but no
full takes.
I had no problem holding bottom or any problem
with snags. Just a few twigs wound in
and one  swim feeder.
It was warm for the time of year
mainly overcast with some sunny intervals.
So I really expected to catch
but no luck.
Shame really as I don't know when I'll
escape again, as she who must be obeyed
is having a hip operation on Monday.
